Russell specialises in environmental law and resource management for Preston Russell Law's clients.

He acts as a consultant to local authorities and Crown agencies and departments - including the Invercargill City Council,  the Minister of Conservation (in the southern region), and a number of government departments including the Department of Conservation.

His interest in resource management and environmental law stems in part from his many outdoor recreation activities in Southland, Central Otago and Fiordland.

Russell can assist with everything from resource consent applications and submissions to hearings before local authorities, the Environment Court, and the High Court.

A member of the Resource Management Law Association and the New Zealand Planning Institute (associate), he is also a former director and trustee of the Southland YMCA and legal advisor to a number of community groups and organisations.

Russell is the chair of the Southland Conservation Board and a member of the management committee of Whenua Hou on Codfish Island. Both positions appointed by the Minister of Conservation. Russell is also a trustee of the Forest Hill Foundation; established to create a predator free mainland island within and including the Forest Hill Scenic Reserve.
