As A Mother What Are My Parental Leave Entitlements?
Special Leave – this entitles a pregnant mother of up to 10 days unpaid leave before maternity leave starts. This can be used for visits to the doctor/midwife etc.
Maternity Leave – Up to 14 weeks unpaid leave. Up to 6 weeks can be taken before the expected delivery date or adoption date of the child and at least 8 weeks after.
Partner’s Leave – Up to 2 weeks unpaid leave for your partner/spouse.
Extended Leave – Of up to 52 weeks less maternity leave taken. This can be shared between you and your spouse/partner provided you are both eligible. This leave must be taken in one continuous period.
Do I Get The Same Entitlements For My Second Child?
Yes as long as the expected delivery date of the second child is at least 12 months after you returned to work from leave for your earlier child.
When Do I Apply For Parental Leave?
At least 3 months before the expected delivery date of your baby or the date of adoption. The application must be made in writing to your employer.
What Is Paid Parental Leave?
Paid parental leave is a taxpayer funded scheme. Paid parental leave replaces an employee’s wages/salary, the maximum amount is $346.63 per week before tax.
Am I Entitled To Paid Parental Leave?
You are eligible for up to 12 weeks payment if you have worked for the same employer for more than 12 months and worked an average of 10 hours per week (including at least one hour per week or 40 hours per month) during that time.
Is It Just The Mother That Gets Paid Parental Leave?
Not necessarily but primary eligibility is with the mother. You may however transfer part or all of your entitlement to your partner if he is eligible. In adoptions, the parents can choose who has primary eligibility.
